Since I had a small bit of spare time, I wanted to go back and draw some characters that are pure nostalgia for me. Sonic the Hedgehog was just one of those cartoons/comics that really has a place in my heart. Pardon me while I wax a bit poetic but ever since I was given a friend’s Genesis and played the original Sonic the hedgehog game, I was hooked. It was so different than Super Mario Bros. You could scroll back and explore levels that did more than just move one direction. The games opened me up to the comic where I found in a bundle over at Toys R Us. I had always wanted a female character to look up to and there was Princess Sally. Smart, quick thinking and far from the helpless princess like Princess Peach. Bunny Rabbot and the other female characters made me happy. The early books were comedic but the later issues took a distopian turn much like the Satam cartoon. I liked darker stories. They didn’t talk down to you. From Bunny’s tragic back story becoming roboticized, to Sally losing her father to the void, to Lupe and her wolf pack, heck even Dulcy had a sad back story. From reading the notes from Ben Hurst, who I only briefly met before he passed away, Nicole would have had one too. It was one of those shows/books that just felt so different than anything else out there.
The comic picked up after the show and while there were some failings and weird story lines like Dulcy being with an abusive boyfriend. Huh? Most of the story I liked. Sadly, after time the comic began to retool itself. There were legal issues removing several characters and a move towards streamlining the series. I understand the motives and reasons. I no longer buy the book though I’d love to draw for it some day.
These five characters were my favorite female characters. I would also list Barby Koala, Dulcy, Lupe, Julie Su and even Hershey the Cat. I may draw them some day but I have to get back to doing work. I really wish that they would be merchandised more. There is like nothing out there you can buy outside Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and even Big the Cat. There is almost nothing out there for the female characters save for the new Amy, who I don’t care for at all. Heck Robotnik doesn’t even get any love.
Anyway, just my two cents.
